.... the woman John Lennon immortalized in The Beatles' hit "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds," died on June 1 of cancer. She was 47.
While a student at the private Heath House School in Weybridge, Suffolk, Britain, Richardson became the subject of a drawing created by four-year-old classmate, Julian Lennon. That image inspired the boy's father to write the popular 1967 song, which appeared on The Beatles' "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" album. Many believed the lyrics were simply a barely concealed reference to LSD, but John Lennon debunked this rumor in a 1975 interview.

Captain of the Sierra Leone national amputee soccer team, M'byo Conteh, practices with fellow teammates in Freetown, during a training camp prior to a tour of the United Kingdom in August. The club was founded in 2001 by men who had lost their limbs in Sierra Leone's decade-long civil war. Players come from the country's lowest socio-economic level and have little opportunity for employment. Part of the aim of the tour was to draw attention to the plight of amputees in Sierra Leone. Another beautiful spot out west was Ganges, Salt Spring Island BC. There's a great Saturday market and very nice vibe about the place. Down-side is that property market is on par with Vancouver which makes it kinda expensive.

This is a true story.
My friend Mike had a job at the Don Jail on the day that Ernst Zundel was brought in on a contempt charge. He was shipped over from the Bull Pen at City Hall to spend a few days cooling off at the Don.

Apparently he arrived without having been fed breakfast at City Hall and then missed lunch at the Don.Zundel was not happy and was yelling at all the guards that he was being mistreated ( by not being fed ) and that he would get his lawyers onto this and that all the guards would lose their jobs etc.

It just so happened that Mike was downstairs having a late lunch with another friend that worked in the Don Jail kitchen when a call came in from upstairs to the head cook saying that Zundel hadn't had lunch and was creating a hell of a row !

The chief ( a Scotsman ) said to the guard on the phone , " Tell Mr. Zundel , that lunch didn't happen. Just like the holocaust, it just didn't happen.

It's More Than a Game

On May 29th , 1985 , thirty nine fans were killed at Heysel Stadium in Belgium when a wall collapsed during European Champions game between Liverpool and Juventus.

It's generally felt that the blame for the deaths lies on the shoulders of the Liverpool fans.

This Tuesday, April 05, in Liverpool, these two clubs meet again for the first time since the Heysel disaster. It'll be a very emotional time and certainly the evening will be remembered , not only for the passed, but also for the great changes that the Heysel incident brought to English Football.

It is hoped by one and all that there is no problem either at Anfield or during the return match in Turin on April 13,

Another sad posting.

Drummer for "Crowded House " dead at 46. Suicide , history of depression. Leaves "partner" & two kids 8 & 10.

One of my wife's favourite bands. A band that everyone could listen to. They had a real affinity with Canada, too. Often on Much Music and I think they did their farewell concert in Toronto.

As sad as it is, however , I can't fathom the depth of a depression so deep that you would leave 2 kids to have this hanging over their heads for the rest of their lives.

The Rideau Canal Sytem

The Canal runs from Kingston to Ottawa . It was built ( 1826 - 1832 ) in response to hostilities between the USA and Canada during The War of 1812.

Below is Jones Falls ( picture taken last fall ) , and it's a place where we go a couple of times a year. It's about 15 minutes from Kingston. A perfect spot for a picnic or just to walk around. There is a great hotel located right at the falls, The Kenney Hotel.

The Canal is an engineering marvel and you can travel it by boat, bike, hike or follow it by car along Highway 15. Part of the system takes you through Big and Little Rideau Lakes. At the time of its construction it was the largest project of its kind in North America.

Time and history has protected the cancel and application has been made to designate it as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Sad Day in a Small Town

Kingston is home to Queens University and , like any university town, it has its bars. clubs and hang outs for the local student population. Here we call it the ' hub".

At a club on Friday night a Queens football player was stabbed to death. It come as quite a shock for a town of about 115,000. Apparently the accused was set off by being hit by an ice cube and the footballer, who was tending bar, got knifed in the throat and died.

It's very sad and I'd like to extend my sympathy to the friends and family of Justin Schwieg, only 23 years old.
